Brief:
In this module we will explore the history of design with a multi-faceted approach. Our approaches will involve an exploration of twentieth century design, an emphasis on product design and an examination of materials inherent in the process of design. We will look at events, designers and influences governing production and products. Our themes will range from Art Nouveau, Art Deco, The Glasgow school, Bahaus, Werkbund, American money, Pop-art, and finally to Post-modernism.
Students will learn:
• How to evaluate the influence of design
• Applications of Victorian design
• Chronological knowledge of Twentieth century designers
• How to evaluate Architects and their influences in the twentieth century
• Understanding the importance of materials in product design
• To critically analyse prototype designs
• An assessment of ideological influences in relation to politics, economics and historical events.
