About
DCTV
Dublin Community Television are a licensed TV station which is an open membership co-operative allowing volunteers to become members of the station in order to avail of the stations training programs, gain access to filming equipment, and in tun, produce their own weekly shows which can be aired on DCTV, channel 802 on UPC to over 200,000 homes across Ireland.
3rd Year Co-op
For the end of my second semester of 2nd year to the second semester of my 3rd year of college, we were required to spend eight months (May – January) in a workplace of relevance to our course, for me I worked with DCTV in Dublin. Here I worked as a producer, camera operator, and editor of a new project ‘CityWide’ which,
“takes a look at the diverse range of news & events that go into making our unique community.”
The objectives of CityWide were to produce, film and edit five 2-3 minute long segments a week covering any community events or goings on in the City Center and send to broadcast for public viewing on their UPC channel 802.
I also worked on ‘BumpTv’, a music show highlighting Ireland’s top Hip-Hop artists.
Roles and Responsibilities
Working with DCTV, I was never limited to having just one role within the organisation. When I first started I was asked if I was more interested in developing a specific skill over my 8 months (e.g. Work as an editor or just handle camera work) or if I would prefer a broader role working on a production, CityWide. Working on CityWide gave me the opportunity to develop various skills not only technically, but through working with a team as we were learning the going’s on through trial and error of how to produce a show together.
As CityWide had become a training initiative for new members, everyone had a chance of pursuing a different role. These ranged from producing an event to cover, writing up call sheets and getting a crew together, to operating camera’s, sound recording equipment, studio operating, editing, and what became a big responsibility for me, teaching new members the technical aspects of a production.
